... To Manage the FMLA Like a Boss

Top 4 Fall Organization Tips To Manage The FMLA Like a Boss

Ah, autumn. Kids are back at school, pumpkin-spiced lattes are brewing, and leaves will soon begin to fall… onto your workload!

Managing the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) isn’t easy, especially if you’re an HR Generalist who wears many other hats. That said, by being on top of things and taking the time to organize yourself and your department, you are one step closer to managing the FMLA like a boss!

Here are our top organization tips for getting yourself all geared up for the change in season.

1. Make Lists... Lots of Lists!

One of the best way to organize yourself and your team is to have ongoing lists that show who is responsible for each task, and their current status. Consider having something like a whiteboard or electronic list on-the-go at all times, so it’s clear who is working on what, and when other team members can expect certain tasks to be done.

Whether you’re writing down simple administration tasks or making checklists for which FMLA forms you still need to fill out, making lists and checking them twice is sure to keep you on track.

Are those FMLA forms still getting you down? Give our crash course a try.

2. Organize Your Team

Organize for Fall by Organizing your team for FMLA management

Your team is the heart of your operation. Whether you’re a team of 1 or an entire HR department, getting everyone on the same page and ensuring they’re informed on the department’s goals and priorities is absolutely essential to ensuring that you’re organized overall.

Perhaps this means holding staff meetings a couple of times per week. Whatever it takes to ensure that you’re all working collaboratively and effectively.

At the end of the day, the better organized your team is, the easier it will be for you to work together.

3. Spruce Up Your Workspace

Organize for fall by sprucing up your workspace

Having your desk properly organized is crucial to maintaining a sense of balance and control over your daily working life.

Ensuring you know where everything is will lead to fewer interruptions. For example, getting up to grab a pen or paperclip often shuts your brain off of the project at hand, and it can be hard to get your head back up to speed when you return to your desk.

4. Know Where To Reference The Law

Managing leaves of absence is a big part of your day! So you should treat the way you manage it with the same care as you would any other major project.

By getting a better system in place to manage leave, you will also improve your own sense of organization and work-life balance.

A solution like Leave Genius helps you get ahead by being the brain and decision power that will drive you to FMLA compliance. Backed by Presagia’s Absence Compliance Engine, Leave Genius is continuously updated to reflect the changes in federal, municipal, and state leave legislation.

Leave Genius also saves you time, because you no longer have to spend hours on Google searches or on the phone with your legal counsel to get advise on which leave law is applicable to which situation: that's all taken care of by the Genius!

So do yourself a favor this fall: ensure you are all organized for the change in season. And give yourself a bit of a break and give Leave Genius a try.
